Setup
Deploy TermLynx as an add-in to Microsoft Word.
Add-in Store
Install TermLynx using the Microsoft Add-in Store built into Microsoft Word.
Get TermLynx on Microsoft AppSource.
Step by step
- Open a Microsoft Word document
- Open the Insert ribbon tab
- Click Get Add-ins
- Search for TermLynx
- Click Add
Centralized
Overview
Centralized deployment makes TermLynx available to assigned users on supported Word clients after deployment changes have propagated.
Availability is not immediate and may take several hours. Refreshing the add-in list can help users discover an available deployment; it does not guarantee faster server-side propagation. Check the supported-version requirements before deployment or reinstallation.
Administration setup
You can use the centralized deployment feature if you are an IT administrator and plan to deploy TermLynx Cloud to multiple Office 365 users. You will need access to the Office 365 admin panel, where you will install TermLynx from its built-in add-in store.
Once deployment is available on a supported client, assigned users can open TermLynx from the ribbon or the Admin Managed add-in list. On first use, enter your work email, select Send code, then enter the emailed code and select Submit. See passwordless sign-in.
Step by step
- Go to https://admin.microsoft.com/
- Click Show all on the left side menu
- Expand the Settings menu item
- Select Integrated apps
- Click the Add-ins link
- Click on Deploy Add-in
- Click Next on the overlay
- Click Choose from the Store
- Search for TermLynx
- Click Add on TermLynx
- Click Continue
- Click Deploy
End-user setup
Once TermLynx has been deployed from the Office 365 admin panel, check for the Activate button on Word's Home ribbon tab. If it is present, open TermLynx and follow the passwordless sign-in steps.
If the button is not visible yet, check Admin Managed using the steps below. If TermLynx appears there, add it to Word. If it is absent, allow time for propagation and ask your administrator to confirm that the deployment is assigned to your account before attempting reinstallation.
Step by step
- Open Microsoft Word
- Open an empty document
- Open the Insert ribbon
- Click on My Add-ins
- Click on Admin Managed
- Click Refresh in the upper right corner
- Click on TermLynx and then click on Add
Older Office installations
A legacy client without ribbon-command support is different from a deployment that has not appeared yet. Check the supported-version requirements and update or upgrade the client rather than repeatedly reinstalling the add-in.
Before deployment, ensure that Word on Windows uses WebView2. IE11 and EdgeHTML are not supported; update or upgrade unsupported Office installations rather than using legacy activation workarounds.
See the WebView2 requirements.
TLZInstaller
Overview
TLZInstaller (TermLynx Zero Installer) is a program designed to pre-install TermLynx on a Microsoft Word client with a single click.
Note: TLZInstaller is only for Windows users whose organizations use volume-licensed Office instead of Office 365. Word must still meet the WebView2 requirement; TLZInstaller does not make IE11 or EdgeHTML supported.
How pre-installed web add-ins work
Certain web add-ins from the store can be pre-installed on a Microsoft Word desktop client on Windows.
A pre-installed web add-in is bound to a pre-installed add-in slot and will install the add-in upon invoking the command. A button on the Ribbon will invoke the specified command.
A good example of this is the Wikipedia web add-in, which is bound to the first pre-install slot.
Using TLZInstaller
The TLZInstaller creates a new registry entry that binds the Microsoft Word command mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 to the installation of TermLynx.
It will then store the manifest.xml and icons in the cache location.
Finally, TLZInstaller modifies the Microsoft Word UI to create a button that will invoke the mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 command.
The TLZInstaller will also hide the Add-in Store and its Wikipedia button.
Step by step
To use the TLZInstaller, follow these steps:
- Download the TLZInstaller.exe from TermLynx and place it on a file share.
- Run the TLZInstaller as an administrator.
- Re-open Microsoft Word and confirm that the "Activate" button is present.
Pitfalls
Add-in Store policy and controls
Keep the Office Add-in Store policy enabled when using TLZInstaller. Word treats mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 as a store-installation command; disabling the store policy can disable the Activate button even when web add-ins are enabled.
Hiding the Add-in Store and Wikipedia controls is a separate UI change. It does not disable the store policy or block network access. Users do not need to browse the store to use TLZInstaller.
Restricting store network access
Network restrictions are separate from Office policy and hidden controls. If your organization needs to restrict store network access, have your administrator validate firewall rules in your environment without blocking TermLynx or required Office services. The following is a historical example, not a verified current Microsoft address range or a deployment recommendation:
Action: block
Application Name: C:\\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\WINWORD.EXE
Direction: OUT
Enabled: true
Protocol: TCP
Name: Block Add-ins Store
Remote Addresses: 52.111.0.0-52.111.255.255
Modern Microsoft Word versions
The TLZInstaller is only a workaround for versions of Microsoft Word that were sold using bulk licensing.
Using the TLZInstaller on modern versions of Microsoft Word, like the ones deployed via Office 365, is not a viable way to install TermLynx.
For modern Microsoft Word versions, refer to Centralized deployment.
